London Street Scene- 1950s
So yesterday I went to this estate sale. It wasn’t anything special, definitely higher end stuff than I’m used to seeing, but one thing they had was these beautiful boxes of slides of family trips from the 50s and 60s. They were pretty cool but most of them were from around the Oregon/Washington area, so they were mostly just trees. One of the boxes, however, was pictures of England and Ireland in the 50s and 60s with amazing pictures of cities and famous locations. It was great. Then one of the people working the sale pointed me to a giant cardboard box of the duplicate pictures the family hadn’t wanted that were just stuck in boxes and envelopes and forgotten. They gave me the whole box, thousands of slides, for $5. What a steal! The pictures all belonged to a woman named Vina Patterson and she traveled all over the world. There are pictures from all over Europe, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Alaska, New York City, Las Vegas, California, and that’s just some general locations that I could remember of the top of my head. Traveling as an American in the 50s pretty much gave her free range to go wherever the fuck she wanted so there are pictures of people just walking all over historical places and temples with no crowds, no velvet ropes and no cops blocking people from entering. It’s almost like looking into a lost world that we’ll never be able to go back to. And she traveled more places than what I have pictures of. I really want to find out who she was. And not only did she travel all over, she documented where and when each picture was taken. It is like a time machine and I am obsessed. My dad has a slide scanner that he uses for work so I’m fiddling with it so it takes better quality pictures of the slides because I want to post them online. This slide is much brighter than this scan makes it seem. I really hope I can get higher quality pictures. I really want to share more because I can’t even believe how cool they are. Best $5 I ever spent.
